NEW YORK, NY May 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In an important step to fulfill NYU's city-wide strategic vision for expansion of its academic facilities, NYU's engineering affiliate, the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) (top left center), will expand into neighboring space in Downtown Brooklyn's MetroTech Center. 
The move is part of NYU-Poly's $38 million capital plan, called the i-squared-e Campus Transformation - where the "i-squared-e" stands for invention, innovation and entrepreneurship. 
The expansion into MetroTech will allow NYU-Poly to accommodate faculty offices, dry computational labs, small classrooms, and administrative functions, while freeing up space in current facilities for renovation and potential redevelopment.
"MetroTech Center has a great central commons area," said NYU-Poly President Jerry Hultin (lower right photo).  "Expanding into buildings that flank the commons creates a better presence of NYU-Poly in the square, and imparts a more dynamic, vibrant feel to our campus."
NYU-Poly is entering into a 20-year lease with real estate developer Forest City Ratner Companies for a total of 120,000 rentable square feet of space at 2 MetroTech and 15 MetroTech, which also involves a 9-year sub-lease of space from Wellpoint Insurance.

I am finally taking a much needed sabbatical rest from my labors in the Arctic Circle in Alaska. It has almost been a year since I came up here, and finally my hurting body has cried "ENOUGH ALREADY" to the incoming cold  we are now experiencing.

Frankly, I have not planned on leaving for a break, but my hands and arms have been developing excruciating pain, resulting in no sleep at night. Talking to locals, I found this is common among locals due to the cold and weather factors. But for me, it has started to create the beginning symptoms of crippling and debilitating arthritis.
OUCH!
I discovered about a month ago that pain was creeping in as the winter weather approached, to the point where I had to inform my friend Lisa here that I would have to consider relocating and could no longer help her in the capacity I have been helping her with the children in her home, due to these sad symptoms emerging. We tried everything, even buying new kitchen appliances so I would not have to use my hands so much for cooking, etc. But nothing helped.

And so, with great regret and sadness, I will be leaving here, flying out soon to the "LOWER 48" to stay with friends and find out what great mission the Lord Jesus has planned for me NEXT. But I take with me warm memories of the wonderful Inupiaq people here in Kotzebue, and the unsung heroes of Kotzebue who are able to remain here in these challenging circumstances and make a difference.

Several kind and generous people sent up boxes of QUALITY BIBLES to distribute among the children and teens. I have already distributed some, but the others I have turned over to Brother LANCE KRAMER, who has a burning passion to reach out to the children and teens here in ministry.

I frankly had no choice: my flight unexpectedly leaves this week-end! (The person purchasing my ticket never warned me it would be so soon...) And so I will not be here long enough to finish final distribution of the Bibles. 

But it is also good that I am leaving at this time, because of the increasing effects the cold is creating for my health problems now. Everything is frozen here now, and people are just waiting for the first real snowfall to get out their SNOWMOBILES and have some fun in the winter wonderland here!

When I told Brother Lance Kramer and his wife Corina that I regretfully had to leave before the fierce Arctic winds and cold made life even more miserable for my hands and arms, I also informed him that I had some wonderful Bibles sent up by my great readers, that he could now distribute to the kids here in Kotzebue. He was SO EXCITED! 

These are quality expensive Bibles, and Lance simply cannot afford them at this time. He and his wife both recently lost job positions, putting them in great financial crisis. But ministry to children and teens remains foremost in Lance's life and his wife as well. And so, I was happy to turn over these wonderful donated Bibles to Brother Lance and Corina. He will know exactly how to make good use of these priceless treasures among his people here.

For years, America has been on a fast track to tyranny. Duopoly power runs things repressively. Government of, by, and for the people never existed and doesn’t now.
Homeland repression is policy. Police state laws target resisters. Elections are farcical, rigged, and illegitimate. People have no say. Corporate controlled electronic voting machines decide for them.
Money power is firmly in charge. Democracy is illusory, not real.
Corporate/party boss-run Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) members exclude alternative voices. Money power operates secretly with no public oversight. A sham process repeats each electoral cycle.
Alternative party presidential candidates risk arrest for showing up to watch debates. Participation is out of the question.
On October 16, Green Party presidential and vice presidential candidates learned firsthand. Jill Stein and Cheri Honkala were arrested, detained, and held handcuffed uncomfortably to metal chairs in a remote police warehouse for hours.
They were charged with “obstructing traffic.” None at the time was visible. That’s how tyranny works. Challenging authority risks prison or worse. Many are tortured and abused. Some end up dead.
Obama appointed himself judge, jury and executioner. He decides who lives or dies. Romney won’t change a thing. No matter who wins, expect police state America to be more repressive than ever post-election.
If presidential challengers can be arrested and abused, what chance have ordinary people. Step out of line and expect the worst. Stein learned firsthand a second time. Her web site explained.
She supports activists opposing the environmentally destructive Keystone XL (KXL) project. More about it below.
In east Texas, she was arrested and handcuffed for bringing food, Halloween candy, and supplies. She was detained in Wood County jail. Authorities charged her with criminal trespassing. She and others were involved.
“They were not warned of imminent arrests; and the arresting officers did not self-identify as police.” Stein said she’s willing to face arrest in support of blocking KXL.
It’s a controversial 1,661-mile Alberta, Canada to Port Arthur, TX pipeline. Earlier, hundreds of environmental activists protested in front of the White House against it.
If completed, it’ll carry toxic tar sands oil from Western Canada to refineries on America’s Gulf coast. It’ll pass through environmentally sensitive areas in six states.
They include waterways and the Ogallala Aquifer. It’s one of the world’s largest. In America, it supplies about 30% of the nation’s irrigation ground water. It’s also used for human consumption.
Friends of the Earth says Keystone XL “will carry one of the world’s dirtiest fuels: tar sands oil.” Moreover, its route “could devastate ecosystems and pollute water sources, and would jeopardize public health.”
If completed, it’ll double America’s dirty tar sands oil supply. At the same time, environmental toxicity will increase exponentially. No matter the stakes, Big Oil wants it. So do Republicans and many Democrats. Obama once again conceded.
TransCanada Corporation is building it. It’s spill-prone construction record assures trouble. It promised its Keystone I pipeline would leak once every seven years. In year one, it leaked 12 times or once a month on average. It was unprecedented in US pipeline history.
TarSandsBlockade.org asks “Why Oppose KXL?”
For many reasons, it states. NASA scientist James Hansen calls it “a fuse to the largest carbon bomb on the planet.”
All pipelines spill. Avoidance is impossible. Large-scale environmental damage is too great a price to pay. TransCanada said up to 700,000 gallons of tar sands crude could leak without detection. In other words, safeguards are weak and ineffective.
Pipeline construction abuses eminent domain. TransCanada “intimidated landowners” along its route to contractually accede to its demands. In addition, the company “fraudulently steals land from private citizens through eminent domain.”
Water contamination is certain. The Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer (CWA) is threatened. In March 2011, water resources & environmental engineer/consultant Lawrence Dunbar said CWA spillage would be environmentally disastrous. Human and natural resources would be impacted.
Release of enough tar sands contaminants would make affected water resources unfit for human consumption. CWA “is one of the greatest assets of the East-Central region of Texas. It provides water for agriculture, industry, and human consumption and use.”
It’s far too valuable to contaminate. KXL assures it. Remediation would be hard to impossible to achieve.
According to Cornell University’s Global Labor Institute, KXL will also destroy more jobs than it creates. Its September 2011 “Pipe Dreams?” report said job creation claims lack credibility.
At best up to 4,650 temporary ones will be created. In two years or less they’ll be gone. “KXL will not be a major source of US jobs, nor will it play any substantial role at all in putting Americans back to work.”
Moreover, diverting tar sands oil “now supplying Midwest refineries, so it can be sold at higher prices to the Gulf Coast and export markets (means) Midwest (consumers) could be paying 10 to 20 cents more per gallon for gasoline and diesel fuel.”
Doing so will adversely impact other spending and cost jobs. KXL will also have “a chilling effect on green investments and green jobs creation.”
Thus far, green economic spending generated “2.7 million jobs in the US and could generate many more.”
In addition, “Tar Sands oil and energy independence really do not belong in the same sentence.”
Cornell, the Natural Resources Defense Council and other independent assessments say KXL assures higher gas prices.
Exporting tar sands oil won’t reduce US dependence on foreign supplies. Prioritizing exports is planned. At issue is selling at the highest possible price.
KXL violates tribal sovereignty. The Indigenous Environmental Network’s “Mother Earth Accord” supports and urges opposition to tar sands development. At issue is preserving the integrity of US and Canadian First Nations and tribal lands.
TransCanada won’t disclose an analysis of chemical dilutants used to facilitate transporting tar sands oil through KXL. At issue are human and environmentally destructive substances.
The Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration told Congress that pipeline regulations weren’t crafted with tar sands oil in mind. They’re woefully inadequate and require strengthening. At a time of deregulatory extremism, don’t expect it.
The State Department, not EPA, conducted KXL’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Hillary Clinton has close ties to TransCanada lobbyist Paul Elliot. He was one of her main 2008 presidential campaign officials.
EIS analysis was rigged. Its methodology lacked credibility. Results claimed minimal environmental contamination risk.
KXL’s southern area “Gulf Coast Project” failed to conduct its own environmental assessment. Issues related to the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, wild fires, droughts, and others weren’t examined.
Connect the dots. Omnipotent money power, permanent imperial wars, corporate empowerment, rigged elections, homeland repression, and government of, by, and for the privileged few characterize today’s America.
Even independent presidential candidates challenging a system this corrupt, venal and dysfunctional risk arrest, abuse, and possible imprisonment.
On November 6, consider your options. Boycott America’s duopoly. Vote independent or stay home. Change depends on ordinary people struggling long-term. Nothing else works. Not now! Not ever!

Sewage, Bacteria, and Unknown Contaminants from Sandy May Soon Pollute Water

Threats continue to plague the victims of Superstorm Sandy, this time from the floodwater, air, and the very food in their refrigerators.

According to New Jersey Department of Health’s state epidemiologist, Tina Tan, floodwaters can be a noxious brew. “[They] potentially could contain mixtures of a variety of chemicals such as pesticides, paint, gasoline…other things for example that you might store in your garage or basement that might actually get all flooded out.” Add bacteria like E. coli from sewage treatment plants to the toxic stew, and it’s no wonder public health officials are sounding the alarm.

Tan advises watching out for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms of gastrointestinal upset, which can be especially debilitating and even life-threatening for infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.

Victims have been instructed to stay away from water as much as possible and, when possible, to wear protective gear like goggles, gloves, and boots. “Wading through standing water can potentially put people at risk,” says NYU Langone Medical Center’s Dr. Joseph Rahimian. “We saw this in Katrina; people were wading through stagnant water and they developed infections from Vibrio [bacteria].”

New York City acquires its water from groundwater reservoirs which flow downhill to the city, requiring no electricity, but other areas are less fortunate. People must boil water before drinking.

Foodborne Illnesses

Eating, however, is another problem. With no electricity in many areas, hungry victims turn to questionable food in their refrigerators.

“In 2003 there was a long blackout in August, and we saw a significant increase in foodborne illness in the days after,” says Tom Frieden, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The rule of thumb: don’t risk it. Better yet, learn how to preserve your food without electricity.

Threats in the Home

Even after the putrid floodwaters withdraw, residents are faced with moldy homes. This can result in allergic reactions, asthma attacks, bronchitis, and brain complications at worst.

Threats come even from the air itself as people without electricity misuse generators, which cannot be used indoors without proper ventilation. Misuse can result in carbon monoxide poisoning.

There is no time better than the present for those of us who were fortunate enough to be out of Sandy’s path to learn how to prepare for hurricanes or any other disaster. It’s better to know than not to know.

Combat Cops Evict Homeowner in Colorado

Militarized cops in full combat gear were called to evict a woman from her house in Colorado Springs on October 30.
“The homeowner facing eviction was apparently underwater on her mortgage with US Bank. She says she told the bank that all she was asking was for another 30 days in the home before an eviction. She needed an extra month in order to find another place to live, she said,” the PrivacySOS blog reported on October 31.
“But US Bank and the Creek County Sheriff’s Department had other plans, culminating a show of force that thoroughly alarmed activists who had descended on the property to attempt to prevent the eviction.”
As the video below demonstrates, militarized cops dispatched by the bank were primarily interested in sending a message to Occupy Denver activists.



The militarized response by the establishment to the Occupy movement last year – culminating in riots in Oakland, California – is only the beginning. As the wheels continue to come off the economy and people realize the government works for banksters dedicated to stealing their homes and wealth, many will take to the street and combat cops will be dispatched in larger numbers to squelch their indignation.
Eviction and foreclosure activism is growing around the country. On October 30, combat cops in Portland, Oregon, clashed with We Are Oregon demonstrators.
In early October, police in Hampden County, Massachusetts, decided not to respond militarily to around seventy demonstrators protesting a home eviction order by a Colorado bank.

“In its latest 1960s-style protest, the group [Springfield No One Leaves!] planned to form a human blockade around the single-story home, with some members prepared to be arrested for refusing police orders,” MassLive reported.
Oakland mayor Jean Quan admitted that she had participated in a conference call with the leaders of 18 other cities to discuss destroying the Occupy movement. According to DHS documents obtained from a Freedom of Information Act request by the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund, the Department of Homeland Security coordinated efforts with city officials around the country to undermine the Occupy movement.

HOUSTON, TX – HFF announced today that it has closed the sale of and arranged financing for 4600 Highway 6 North (top left photo), a three-story, 53,037-square-foot office building in northwest Houston.
HFF marketed the property on behalf of the seller, the Brookfield Real Estate Opportunity Fund, a division of Brookfield Asset Management. 
Rockwell Management Corporation represented the buyer in the purchase of 4600 Highway 6 North for an undisclosed amount.  HFF arranged the acquisition financing through ViewPoint Bank.
